Features
Offering an even texture and straight grain pattern, Blackbutt timber is the perfect hardwood for creating an attractive finish. The heartwood ranges from golden yellow to pale brown – and occasionally a slight pinkish tone may be present – ensuring a warmth that is hard to match. We recommend staining, polishing or oiling the timber to allow its natural colouring to shine; paints have been known to crack over time.
Strength and durability
Whether seasoned or unseasoned, Blackbutt is considered a very strong timber – perfect for joinery and structural use. It can be expected to last up to 10 years when used below ground, and well over 40 years when used for above ground applications. Durable and long-lasting, it truly is an excellent choice for both interior and exterior projects.
Drying and shrinking
Blackbutt timber has a high shrinkage rate, meaning as it dries gaps will form between the boards – especially when used for exterior projects. For this reason, we recommend investing in pre-dried and seasoned boards, allowing you to build with them immediately.
Fire Prone Areas
If you live in an area where the threat of a bushfire is a concern, then Blackbutt may be the perfect choice for you! As one of only seven hardwoods that have been approved by the Building Commission in Victoria for use in fire prone areas, it is rated between BAL 12.5 to 29 – where embers and burning debris are apparent, increasing the likelihood of exposure to radiant heat.
